For December, I am featuring a type of wood grain. The wood grain
is called burl wood and can be found with most wood species. True
Burl wood comes from a section of the tree attacked by disease. The
result of the tree fighting off the disease is a chunk of the tree that
looks swollen and contains wood with swirled grain rather than the
normal straight grain. A similar grain pattern is often found in
crotchwood which occurs in the area of a tree where a main branch
joins the main trunk. This is called a crotch of the tree and hence
crotchwood forms here. Often crotchwood is called burl wood. Both
have grain that twists and turns through the wood. Regardless of
what caused the grain swirls, burl woods are beautiful and a pen
made of burl is an amazingly beautiful thing. You may find yourself
tracking the swirls of the grain as they twist and turn around the pen.
See some of the beauty in the images shown here.
