January's Feature – Custom Woodturning
The feature for this month is a service I offer that I refer to as custom woodturning. This service allows you to take
part in the creative process of the wood turning art.
Sometimes this entails simply specifying a wood and hardware finish you like, other times it has been the
customer describing the shape of the finished wood.
A recent example was a customer supplying their own wood. He shipped me a box of old Italian Olivewood that he
had obtained on a trip to Italy. The initial request was for me to look at the wood and tell him what I could make.
Many e-mails later I was working on the six beautiful Olivewood pens shown above. These pens were priced the
same as a classic hardwood pen; I do not charge a premium for custom work, unless it will add extra material or
time. These pens were quite difficult to make due to the fragile nature of this wood, but I honoured my quote and
only charged the initial quoted amount. Later this customer decided he wanted a different finish on the hardware. I
reworked the pens charging him only enough to cover my materials and postage fees.
Take a look around this page, all the items here were custom made for a customer.
If you would like to explore a custom item for yourself or someone you love, send me some details on the quote
request page. I will be happy to help you work out the details and I will provide a no-obligation quote.
Thanks for viewing my web site; I would love to hear your feedback. Also, please send me any questions or
comments you may have. You can reach me through the contact-me page.
