Celebration of Life – Ken Harding -- Speech by Brad Harding
Introduction: I am Brad Harding, one of Ken’s son’s. Dad asked for this COL because he never really liked
funerals, he thought it better to remember people the way they were rather than mourn that they were gone. In
that spirit, I would like to share some memories that I have of my Dad.
Memories:
-sitting on cottage porch this summer, a warm summer night, watching the stars in the heavens and the two of us
enjoying a quiet chat under the stars.
-when I was a child, Dad was always there at home and he had time for me, I don’t remember the games we
played, but I remember him spending time with me.
-I remember traveling across Canada in the summers, swimming in an icy river in BC, driving the Cabot trail in
NS, seeing moose by the road side in northern Ontario, taking the ferry to PEI, and checking out a bear trap
beside the washroom at a campground in the Rockies. Sailing together on Georgian Bay on a plywood boat we
built in the basement. Camping and cottaging, usually with his sister's family, the Gardner’s
-I remember calling him for advice when I was unsure.
-Our 3 son's loved to play with Grandpa when he came over. He would join in with their games. In the pictures
you will see him with wearing a toy police riot gear set, and in another he is with Josh inside a toy play tent. He
would bounce on the trampoline with the boys, push them on the swings and play rescue hero's with Ben. He
would play hide and seek with Ethan and play video games with all three. A week ago, Ethan our 5 year old
announced to his mother that he misses Grandpa. We will all miss him Ethan!
-I was amazed at Dad thinking of others this fall: He knew he was dying and yet he was constantly trying to make
things easier for everyone around him. I remember fondly Dad joking with Karen in the hospice a week before he
died, he had a great sense of humor. That was the type of person he was, and is for me an example of how we
should live our lives.
-I remember Dad running marathon's, curling, hearing his stories about scuba diving and sailing in the Caribbean.
- I remember his last night, when I sat up with him in the hospice. There I had the privilege and opportunity to
give something back to someone who gave so much to me, our family, and friends.
Thank you for sharing these memories with me.
