Distribution: French Guiana & the lower Amazon. Tree: Marblewood reaches heights of 100 feet, with a clear bole of 60 feet and a 2 foot diameter. The base is heavily buttressed. It is the only species of the genus Marmaroxylon. Wood: The heartwood of Marblewood is brownish yellow with large, irregular purplish brown streaks and patches. The sapwood is yellowish. It has a medium luster and has no charcteristic odor or taste. It is hard, heavy, tough and strong with a medium texture. Working Properties: Difficult to work, but finishes smoothly, with a high polish. Uses: Wheelwright work, cabinetry, marquetry, decorative panels. |
